How It All Started
Gordon Rigg was born in Bacup, Lancashire in 1919, the second eldest of five brothers. Leaving school at 14, Gordon had several jobs and in his spare time spent a lot of time cycling - as far as all over England. In August 1945 an opportunity arose to take over a smallholding near to his home in Walsden. After taking up the offer, Gordon started growing plants on his small holding and would cycle round the district selling plants door to door and offering to plant them free of charge.
His son, Peter joined the growing business in 1968, with the three aluminium greenhouses being built beteen in 1972 and 1974. In 1989 further expansion saw Gordon buying Winterbutlee Mill, and in 1992 he purchased the Jubilee Mill complex at Strines Street, Walsden just across the road from the garden centre. This is now used for packaging for own brands, bird nuts, pet food, fertilizers, polythene etc. and for warehousing and storage of direct import containers and bulk products.
The Bottoms Mill Shop & Cafe was later purchased and has been extensively re-furbished, extended and was re-opened by Gordon.
As the business has grown over the years, so has the Rigg family. We’re proud to now also have the third generation of the family actively involved in the day-to-day running of Gordon Rigg Garden, Home & Leisure, as Peter and Pauline’s children have joined the family business.
From roots as a local garden centre to becoming one of the largest independent garden centres in the North West, family has been at the heart of everything Gordon Rigg Garden Centre Does. They welcome foe that that they would be nothing without their valued customers who allow them to keep doing what they love most, and consider each and every client as part of the Rigg family, too!
